You do not need a rescue disk or to boot off anything except the hard drive.
You can do this operation completely remotely.
You will not lose any data in this conversion.
To the best of my knowledge this is the most complete and comprehensive and step by step manual on converting a system to use software raid. It has had numerous improvements made to by the thousands of people that have used it worldwide.

This only covers using mdadm. Mdadm is easier to use than raidtools or raidtools2.
